Salt Fish Tales

Asian Mermaid multidisciplinary dance series

Rooted in Hong Kong and extending across the coasts of East and South East Asia, Salt Fish Tales is a research-based multidisciplinary performance project that re-imagines mermaid. Moving away from exoticized and eroticized impression, the project centers an empowering, fluid, and sacred Asian oceanic figure—one that speaks to coastal memory, ancestral water and mountain myths, as well as contenporary female legends. Together, we connect the local community to reimagine the shared narratives.

Bandung, 2026

In Bandung, West Java, I immersed myself in the sacred movement of Iswara Gandrung, researching Nyi Roro Kidul—the powerful Mermaid Queen of the Southern Sea. Collaborating with local dancer Wawa Sapta, this journey bridged traditional Sundanese ritual, daily livelihood, sacred temple heritage, and fluid choreography to honor the ocean goddess as a wise, healing force.

Takeno, 2026

In Takeno and Toyooka, I engaged with the local coastal community to research the Ningyo legends. Collaborating with scenography and music artist group Uka (Alysa Leung x Uka), we gathered local voices, maritime sounds, and field memories along the shore. Together with film director Mo Lai Yan Chi, we record Takeno with moving images and co-create a work-in-progress performance for the Toyooka Theatre Festival Fringe.
